Le motivazioni che mi spinsero tra la fine degli anni settanta e gli inizi degli anni ottanta alla realizzazione di questo reportage sui mestieri tradizionali, erano sostanzialmente due: costruire una documentazione che ne garantisse la memoria storica, fissando con le immagini una rappresentazione diretta e onesta di quel mondo; la fascinazione che provocava (e che tuttora produce) in me il lavoro artigianale nelle sue molteplici sfaccettature. Per questo motivo, decisi di intraprendere questo reportage-indagine sugli antichi mestieri, dedicando una particolare attenzione ad alcune attività del mondo artigianale presenti a Sassari e nel territorio della provincia che mi sembravano già da allora a rischio di estinzione. Avevo la netta impressione di avvicinarmi ad un mondo di ostinati “avversari“ della tecnologia e della produzione di massa, un mondo costituito da uomini, estranei ai sistemi produttivi massificati, capaci di usare bene le proprie mani e cultori di tecniche e procedimenti espressione dei saperi tradizionali. Non ero perciò alla ricerca di inquadrature esteticamente suggestive, ma ritenevo che fosse mio compito fissare con i miei scatti e rappresentare fedelmente alcune realtà di lavoro che giudicavo tanto interessanti quanto fragili. Oggi alcuni di questi mestieri sono scomparsi anche a causa dei processi di globalizzazione ed alla imposizione di norme restrittive nazionali e europee che mal si conciliano con lo sviluppo locale. Altri, legati alle competenze e alle materie prime locali, sono tenuti in vita da persone che continuano ad usare molto le mani e poco le macchine, e mantengono un ruolo economico e soprattutto sociale nei territori di appartenenza. La mostra è composta da 51 immagini in bianco e nero ed è organizzata in collaborazione con il Comune di Sassari, con il sostegno dell’Università degli Studi di Sassari, di Comunica, Sidernet e Visual-e. Fa parte della rassegna Figuras, un progetto a cura di Ogros-fotografi associati sostenuto dalla Fondazione di Sardegna.
